The History of The Gardeners Cottages
The Gardeners Cottages was part of Arden House, located amidst serene beauty, close to Loch Lomond’s shores. The former Arden estate offers a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s Victorian past. Originally built to house the gardeners of Arden House, our charming cottages are now beautifully restored holiday homes set against the backdrop of a meticulously rejuvenated Victorian walled garden. Their story is deeply intertwined with the history of Arden House, the rural community of Arden, and the legacy of one of Glasgow’s most prominent families.
The Origin of Arden House
Arden House, which lends its name to the surrounding area, was constructed in 1868 by John Burnett for Sir James Lumsden, a distinguished Glasgow merchant and former Lord Provost of the city. Lumsden acquired the Arden estate in the late 1860s when wealthy industrialists and businessmen sought country retreats along Loch Lomond's banks. The estate, spanning several acres of picturesque woodland and shoreline, became a symbol of prosperity and prestige, with Arden House itself designed to reflect the grandeur of its owner.
Though the name “Arden” has no intrinsic meaning, it became synonymous with the estate and, eventually, with the surrounding 4-square-mile area. Arden today lies partly in the parishes of Bonhill and Luss and is centred around a roundabout on the A82, about two miles north of Balloch. The once-secluded estate of Arden House now shares its name with the growing rural community that has developed around it.
The Victorian Walled Garden and Gardeners Cottages
The Victorian era was a time of innovation and attention to detail, especially regarding grand estates. No country home of such stature would have been complete without a walled garden, a feature that served both practical and aesthetic purposes. At Arden House, the walled garden was the heart of estate life, providing fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers for the household. The garden was tended by a dedicated team of gardeners who lived in the Gardener’s Cottages, which were built adjacent to the garden for convenience.
The cottages were constructed as simple but sturdy homes, offering shelter and a sense of community for the estate’s workforce. Positioned along one side of the walled garden, they overlooked the carefully cultivated grounds, where everything from berries to exotic fruits was grown in the sheltered environment created by high stone walls.
Modern Revival
Over time, as large estates like Arden became less economically viable, maintaining grand gardens and their associated cottages became increasingly difficult. By the mid-20th century, the estate’s fortunes had waned, and Arden House was eventually converted into flats. The walled garden and cottages fell into disrepair, remnants of a bygone era of opulence and meticulous craftsmanship.
In recent decades, however, the Gardeners Cottages and the Victorian walled garden have undergone a remarkable transformation. Avril and Andy MacLeod rescued the neglected garden and cottages, restoring them to their former charm while giving them a new lease of life as self-catering holiday homes. Today, they live in one of the cottages and have converted the remaining three—Linnhe, Lomond, and Luss—into warm and welcoming accommodations for visitors seeking a tranquil retreat by Loch Lomond.
Holiday Accommodation with Historic Charm
Each restored Gardener’s Cottage offers a blend of historic charm and modern comfort. Linnhe and Lomond are ideal for families or groups of friends, accommodating up to five guests each. Meanwhile, Luss is a cosy hideaway for couples, offering a perfect escape for two.
The cottages retain much of their original character, with period features complementing contemporary amenities. Guests can enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the enclosed lawn and garden, where rabbits and squirrels are frequent visitors. In the spring, it’s not uncommon to see families of ducks wandering from the nearby loch.
The restored walled garden, lovingly cared for by the MacLeods, is once again a place of beauty and productivity. The combination of the garden’s vibrant plant life and the tranquility of the nearby loch creates a truly idyllic setting.
